Pragmatic Play Megaways Titles: How the Mechanic Works

Megaways is a licensed slot engine that Pragmatic Play, among many studios, builds titles on. It is the most commercially successful slot mechanic of the past decade and it is widely misunderstood, mostly because of the enormous number in its marketing.

The core idea

In a conventional slot, each reel shows a fixed number of symbols — usually three. In a Megaways game, each reel shows a variable number, typically between two and seven, decided fresh on every spin.

Wins pay on adjacent reels from the left, regardless of row position. So the number of winning combinations is simply the symbol counts multiplied together.

Where 117,649 comes from

Six reels, each showing up to seven symbols: 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 = 7⁶ = 117,649.

That is the maximum, not the typical. A more ordinary spin might land 4 × 3 × 5 × 2 × 6 × 3 = 2,160 ways. The headline figure occurs rarely.

Why more ways does not mean more winning

This is the part the marketing obscures. More ways to win means each individual way pays less. The game’s RTP is unchanged by the mechanic — the designers simply distribute the same return across a different shape.

What actually changes is volatility. Megaways titles are typically high variance: many small or zero outcomes, with the real money concentrated in the bonus round.

The supporting mechanics

Cascading (tumbling) reels

Winning symbols are removed and new ones drop in. A single spin can chain several wins. Nearly universal in Megaways titles, and the main source of their pacing.

The reel above the reels

Most Megaways games have a horizontal row across the top, feeding extra symbols into the middle four reels. It is part of the ways calculation, which is why those reels can reach seven.

Unlimited multiplier in free spins

The signature feature. During the bonus round, a multiplier increases with each cascade and does not reset between spins. This is where the large outcomes come from, and why the base game feels so thin by comparison — the maths is deliberately back-loaded.

Reading one before you play

  • Check the RTP in the info panel. Megaways titles frequently ship with multiple configurable settings, and the operator picks one.
  • Check the max win cap. Most are capped, commonly at 10,000x to 50,000x the stake. The cap matters more than the ways count.
  • Check the bonus trigger. Scatters needed, and whether a buy option exists.
  • Expect a long base game. If a dry run of a hundred spins would bother you, this is the wrong category.

The honest summary

Megaways is a presentation and volatility mechanic, not a value one. 117,649 ways sounds like a better deal than 243 ways; mathematically it is neither better nor worse, just differently shaped. The games are well made and the bonus rounds are genuinely well paced. The number on the box is marketing.
